Down for the count

Here is a look back in time. The pictures here are very vintage (originals from 1913).

The fight took place in 1913 at the Tommy Burns Arena in Calgary Alberta. McCarthy was pronounced dead about 8 minutes after the knockout which came after about 2 minutes of fighting. The coroner's jury decided that no blow had been responsible for McCarthy's collapse but that death was due to a hemorrhage of the brain, probably caused by a previous injury. When told in his hotel room that McCarthy had died Arthur Pelkey broke down and cried like a child. The next day the Tommy Burns Arena was destroyed by fire. Arson was suspected.
